民間故事常被視為一種集體表達，先前的研究往往局限於形式因素或普世意義。本書以金德順的故事為個案，借用布緹海默(Bottigheimer)和瓦納(Warner)提出的特有文化的研究方法，質疑了民間故事的價值觀能夠跨越時空和性別中立的兩種假設。金德順是一個具有天賦的女性故事講述家，先後生活於朝鮮和中國的毛時代和改革開放時期。
每一時代有其特有的性別特徵和取向，金的故事再現了她所處社會的性別原則和規範，為我們提供了對民間故事新的研究視角和理解方式。作者指出，歷史中的文化主體並不總是來自受過良好教育的上層社會，同時也應涵納像金德順這樣的平凡個體。從特有文化和性別視角解讀民間故事，有助於我們更好地理解歷史脈絡中的常民，並且對他們的才能給予應有的尊重。
