書籍簡介 During my last year before retirement as an agricultural engineer, the idea to travel Europe popped into my mind. The more I thought about it, the bigger the plan grew and in more detail. One month after retirement, I was in London, looking around for an adventure bike to buy, and did just that within a week. The same day I left for France and this wonderful adventure started. I had a rough plan with only the different countries in sequence, with no bookings in advance except a visa for Ukraine and obviously for Europe. My idea of exploring a country consists more of doing the countryside than cities and such. It is also about riding a motorbike and drinking in as much as the freedom allows you. The idea originally was also to use hostels for accommodations, but this backfired. You don't find hostels in the countryside! This is why I camped in a small tent most of the time. After the French countryside, I did beach hopping along the Med Coast from Marseilles to Monaco. After seeing all the beautiful bodies on the beaches, I took on the French Alps from Monaco to Switzerland. After a short turn through Switzerland, it was over the Alps and through the tunnels to Italy, mostly the northern part with all the lakes. My route took me through Milan and Venice to the border of Croatia, and then through Eastern Europe. 'Namibia is the country where I was born and bred,' says author Siegfried Engels. 'Our family originated from Germany in the 1800s, emigrated to South Africa, and from there to Namibia in 1928 and here since then.' His next motorbike adventures are already planned. 作者簡介 Siegfried Engels was born in 1951 in Windhoek, Namibia. He matriculated in 1969 at Windhoek High School, did Technicon training in Agriculture in Pretoria, South Africa, but he worked most of his life in the agricultural field in Namibia. After school, he did his compulsory military service in a medical unit in the Civil Force over a span of twenty years, together with his main occupation. In his military career he started as a trooper and ended the last two years as the Regiment Sergeant Major (RSM) of his unit. During the ’80s, he was involved in motor rally racing as a navigator. At the age of fifty-two, he started to participate in the cycling sport and did many races in Namibia, South Africa, and Europe. Cycling is still a favourite, but he added tri-athlons in a team format together with his son. He is also in possession of a Day Skippers Certificate for motor and sail yachts. Kayaking is the last of interests he has added lately. His adventure life had already started in school at the age of seventeen when he did his first solo adventure, riding a bicycle over the desolate highlands of the Khomas Hochland from Windhoek to Walvisbay on the coast over a period of three days. He most probably inherited adventure genes from both of his parents. On both sides, they were involved in agriculture and the fighting forces of their country! All through his life, he managed to pack in as much adventure as possible wherever he found an opportunity. He could not wait for retirement so he could be off for his second life—the life of a full-time adventurer.
