Introduction

Have you read IdioMagic 1? If you have, you may think you’ve seen every possible English idiom. After all, IdioMagic I contains around 300 idioms altogether. English is a rich language, however. It has enough idioms to fill at least one more book. That’s why I wrote IdioMagic 2.

This new volume will be familiar to readers of IdioMagic 1. Each new story features idioms that have something in common, such as “floor and ceiling” words. Putting the idioms together in this way helps you to tell them apart. Why is this important? Because even though idioms may sound alike, they usually have very different meanings. As you will learn, “raising the roof” is quite different from “hitting the ceiling.”

You should aim first of all to recognize idioms and to understand their meanings. Don’t be in a hurry to include them in your speech or writing. In fact, it’s easy to make mistakes with idioms, so be careful when you use them!

I hope that IdioMagic 2 will help you to become more familiar with English idioms. I also hope that they will help you to discover that idioms-and and all of English-can be fun!
