It has been described as the modern circus, and focuses upon a storyline
as well as amazing performances. It has several resident and touring
troupes and draws heavily from the circus tradition. Emphasizing the use of
humans as performers, Cirque du Soleil does not make use of animals. Instead,
its performances combine elements of street performances and busking, circus,
opera, ballet, and rock music. Acts include contortionists, jugglers, feats
of strength, clowning, and trapeze artists. Their costumes are very colorful.
Cirque shows traditionally do not use pre-recorded music; with some
exceptions all music is played live, and in many performances the spoken
parts are done in Cirquish, an imaginary language invented by the company.
Cirque shows begin as a creative concept, usually with elements of a central
story line, a design concept and the selection of a composer for the music.
These elements remain relatively constant throughout the production run of
a given show.
However, the shows also include both "house" and "guest" acts. House acts
are performed by the full-time cast members, some whom may be involved in
several routines. Not all prepared routines are presented in every
performance. Guest acts rotate in and out over the run of the show (clowns
are typically guest acts). As a result, Cirque shows can vary somewhat
performance to performance, and shows tend to evolve over time. Cirque
creators borrow from some of circus's earliest forms (for example, banquine
and teeterboard acts) but also regularly introduce new apparatus. For
example, Cirque introduced the use of bungee cords to aerial acts and created
a modified tumbling trampoline called a Power Track, both of which have since
been adopted by other circuses.
Cirque du Soleil recruits acts from different world circuses, including from
China and Russia, blending them into their own style.
Among veteran circus performers, Cirque is regarded as one of the world's
best circuses, due to higher than normal pay scales and benefits.
Cirque du Soleil has produced a number of performance DVDs and soundtrack
CDs.
The troupe was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.
Cirque du Soleil - Lovesick (2006)
Dare to enter the sensual world of LOVESICK, an adult-themed, reality-
based drama that explores the eccentric lives lead by Sin City's most
provocative performers.
Filmed over two years and set in Las Vegas during the creation of the
cabaret-style production
ZUMANITY, ANOTHER SIDE OF CIRQUE DU SOLEIL', LOVESICK discloses the
disturbing reality of the talented and entrancing artists who put their flesh
and audacity centre stage to create this edgy new show.
Sexy, poetic and intensely erotic, LOVESICK slips inside a startling
universe where men dress up as women, brides perform in staged orgies, and
love affairs are exposed under the show's glaring spotlights.
Cirque du Soleil -Corteo
Corteo, which means "cortege" in Italian, is a joyous procession, a
festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of
the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into
a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious
space between heaven and earth.
The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere,
watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the
small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the
charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of
the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of
humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and
playful, carries Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion
teases reality.
Cirque du Soleil - Midnight Sun
On July 11 2004, over 200,000 spectators filled the downtown streets of
Montreal to take part in a unique celebration, an incredible one-night-only
special event! With over 250 artists, Midnight Sun is a brilliant combination
of music and circus - the perfect chemistry of sight and sound. An
unforgettable viewing experience filmed live in high definition!
Cirque Du Soleil - La Nouba (2004)
The show name La Nouba originates from the French phrase "faire la nouba,"
which means to party, to live it up. This creation is an unforgettable
journey through our universe—at once threatening and exhilarating,
frightening and familiar. La Nouba is the story of all stories, the site of
all mysteries, where dreams and nightmares sleep side by side. La Nouba is
memory, individual and universal. It beckons to us, challenges us to
uncover passions we thought we'd lost long ago. Here, anything is possible.
Cirque du Soleil - Varekai (2003)
Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary
world—a world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai.
From the sky falls a solitary young man, and the story of Varekai begins.
Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world
populated by fantastical creatures, this young man sets off on an adventure
both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place
of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered.
The word varekai means "wherever" in the Romany language of the gypsies
the universal wanderers. This production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to
the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to the infinite passion of
those whose quest takes them along the path that leads to Varekai.
Cirque du Soleil - Dralion
Dralion is the fusion of ancient Chinese circus tradition and the avant-
garde approach of Cirque du Soleil. The show's name is drawn from its two
main symbols: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, representing
the West. Dralion derives much of its inspiration from Eastern philosophy
with its perpetual quest for harmony between humankind and nature.
Suspended in time between the past and the future, Dralion is a
celebration of life and the four elements that maintain the natural order:
air, water, fire and earth. Innovation soars to new heights as it defies
the laws of nature. Dralion is a dynamic performance that transcends the
boundaries of the imagination and leads us into a dreamscape with a new and
sparkling perspective.
Cirque du Soleil -Journey of Man
child is born. We see underwater swimmers representing this. He is young, in
a jungle setting, with two fanciful "instincts" guiding him as swooping
bird-like acrobats initially menace, then delight. As an adolescent, he
enters a desert, where a man spins a large cube of metal tubing. He leaves
his instinct-guides behind, and enters a garden where two statues dance in
a pond. As he watches their sensual acrobatics of love, he becomes a man.
He is offered wealth (represented by a golden hat) by a devil figure. In a
richly decorated room, a scruffy troupe of a dozen acrobats and a little girl
reawaken the old man's youthful nature and love.
Cirque du Soleil - Quidam
Quidam: a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street
corner, a person rushing past. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming,
going, living in our anonymous society. A member of the crowd, one of the
silent majority. The one who cries out, sings and dreams within us all.
This is the "quidam" that Cirque du Soleil is celebrating.
A young girl fumes; she has already seen everything there is to see, and her
world has lost all meaning. Her anger shatters her little world, and she
finds herself in the universe of Quidam. She is joined by a joyful
companion as well as another character, more mysterious, who will attempt
to seduce her with the marvelous, the unsettling, and the terrifying.
Cirque du Soleil - Alegria
Alegria is a mood, a state of mind. The themes of the show, whose name means
"jubilation" in Spanish, are many. Power and the handing down of power over
time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age,
youth—it is against this backdrop that the characters of Alegria play out
their lives. Kings' fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children
make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the
passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.
Cirque du Soleil - "Baroque Odissey (1994)
A Baroque Odyssey: a video retrospective of 10 years of magic! This
program takes spectators into the heart of the Cirque du Soleil universe.
Rather than a traditional retrospective or a piece of exuberant nostalgia,
this 10th-anniversary program highlights the essence of Cirque du Soleil—the
amazing energy and spirit which has delighted audiences around the world.
Cirque du Soleil - Saltimbanco
Saltimbanco is a celebration of life. Conceived as an antidote to the
violence and despair so prevalent in the 20th century, this phantasmagoria
offers up a new vision of urban life, overflowing with optimism and joy.
Saltimbanco is anything but linear; rather, it is a kaleidoscope, a
whirlwind, an adventure in which anything can happen. Saltimbanco has its own
special language, and its spirit is conveyed through voice, movement and
music.
Cirque du Soleil - Reinvente
Emmy award-winning film Le Cirque Reinvente captures the extraordinary
Cirque du Soleil show of the same name that played for sold-out audiences
in 1987. The show includes breathtaking feats of handbalancing, tightrope
walking, acrobatic cycling, chair balancing, contortion and aerial
acrobatics, as well as our fabulous clowns. With our fire and youth, we set
out to reinvent the circus!
Cirque du Soleil -La Magie Continue
The show La Magie Continue is a jewel in the Cirque du Soleil crown. This
film documents the show that helped propel us to new heights of success.
For fans new and old, it offers a glimpse into the impressive beginnings of
what was to become a worldwide phenomenon and an inspiration to millions of
people
